20,000 Days on Earth

“The most sophisticated rock star biog ever.” – Nick James, editor of Sight & Sound

Drama and reality combine in a fictitious 24 hours in the life of musician and international cultural icon Nick Cave. With startlingly frank insights and an intimate portrayal of the artistic process, this BAFTA nominated, top UK grossing film by Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard examines what makes us who we are, and celebrates the transformative power of the creative spirit.

“An aptly intense and innovative study of pioneering rock poet Nick Cave, “20,000 Days on Earth” playfully disguises itself as fiction while more than fulfilling the requirements of a biographical documentary. As if that weren’t ambitious enough, co-directors Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, who wrote the movie with Cave, add ornately detailed production design and gorgeous widescreen images to the mix, defying the rough-edged, caught-on-the-fly feel of most rock docus.” – Rob Nelson, Variety

The film premiered in January 2014 at Sundance, where it won the World Documentary Directing Award for Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard and the Editing Award for Jonathan Amos. Presenting the awards, the jury said “we award this film for being arguably the most exciting film in competition. It ruthlessly deconstructs two very different art forms, music and documentary, yet takes nothing away from the everyday reality or magic of it’s main subject. This is documentary storytelling at it’s most visionary and mind blowing.”

“The film conceals as much as it reveals, and its beauty is that it pretends to do nothing else. It embraces a mystery and protects it, and it’s thrilling to behold.” – Dave Calhoun, Time Out
